Lathom Canal Basin and Dry Dock.....

The dry dock, now disused, was built circa 1781 and is to the right of this shot, the canal is to the left.
The dry dock and basin is at the junction of the Leeds Liverpool canal, and the Rufford Branch canal, and was an ideal site for boat repairs.
The massive wooden beams holding back the canal water are slotted into the sandstone walls at the entrance of the dock. These would be removed to allow a boat into the dock, the boat would then be positioned over six trestles. The dock entrance was then closed and the water drained so work could be carried out on the hull.
Better seen large.
