The Green Gym
The Isle of Wight Green Gym is a community group, now well into our ninth year of working to help improve the Island's countryside through conservation work. We operate each Wednesday throughout the year at venues right across the Island and with an average weekly turnout of approximately 30 participants we have achieved an astonishing 40,000 hours of conservation volunteering in the nine years since the group was formed.
In 2009 in recognition of its work the group was awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service which is the MBE for volunteer groups to recognise outstanding work done in their communities.
Today the group were working in a small nature reserve close to the centre of the Newport tidying up the area and laying a new wood-chip footpath by way of a conveyor belt of wheelbarrows.
People of all ages and abilities take part and we all enjoy the physical activity and fresh air as well as the social aspect . At break time the coffee, cake and biscuits taste far better than at any cafe.
