Fort Clonque

This is Fort Clonque. One of the many forts on Alderney it was built by the Victorians and completed in 1855. This was in response to the French extending their fortifications and harbour at Cherbourg. The fort was designed for 10 guns in 4 batteries and with accommodation for 59 men. It was utilised in WW2 by the Germans who added to it including a big tank turret.

The fort is now owned by the Landmark Trust and can be rented for holidays. It sleeps 13 people in several buildings. It is a lovely place to stay ( we stayed once for a significant birthday) but is very expensive and you have to be aware that the causeway is completely covered at high tide!
I know I blipped this last time we were staying here too but always nice to see it as have happy memories of our gathering there.

After a few showers it was a lovely sunny day, though windy. So nice to walk along the coast path and on some of the beaches. One of the beaches has a fenced off area for a Ringed Plovers nesting site. I know there is another area on the other side of the island where there are notices to stay away from a Tern nesting area too.
