Magdalene Fjord
Svalbard Day 5 (back blip)
Svalbard Day 5
This is the view we woke up to this morning, the stunning Magdalene Fjord. We sat on deck for awhile before breakfast admiring the beautiful scenery. Breakfast was excellent and I can already see we are going to eat too much on this trip. Immediately afterwards the two tender boats we lowered and we put on life jackets and went ashore, where we walked along a beach to see some walruses (see extra) and then up to a view point. The guides had their guns and flares out and the tender boats did patrols whilst we were on land. On the way back we saw Red Throated Diver on its nest (see extra) and Arctic Terns.
Back on the boat we had lunch whilst sailing past other glaciers in Smeerenburg Fjord and suddenly a polar bear was spotted. It turned out it was a mother and two older cubs feeding on a whale carcass. We weren’t able to get too close but it was fabulous and SO exciting to see them (see extra)
The boat then moored by Sallyhamma beach and we went ashore and walked to a viewpoint. When we returned the crew had organised a BBQ on the beach (see extra from viewpoint) and we had an amazing evening celebrating the midnight sun round the campfire. What an incredible day!
