44 years ago today HM QE2 signed the Open University's royal charter. Part of the charter recognises that the university was established to "promote the educational well-being of the community generally".

This is the proper, pukka charter that Her Madge signed with the royal biro all those years ago - or at least that's what the OU librarians who were guarding it would have us believe. So if time allows raise your glass to the OU tonight.
