Notions of Balance.
This sculpture, (untitled), in the garden of Clare College Memorial Court, Cambridge, is by Michael Bolus 1974. He was a leading member of the New Generation of Sculptors, in the 60's and 70's. Bolus abandoned traditional techniques, in favour of working with steel and aluminium materials that allowed him to explore the notions of balance and extensions of form. Monochrome red brings continuity and a sense of weightlessness to the complex skeletal framework of this sculpture, which balances as if hovering in space. To appreciate it fully one needs to walk around it.
