Taken aback

Some noice did startle them ~ we're waiting the ferry here to cross over the waters that run thro' Amsterdam.

The people of Amsterdam North won the battle years ago, to have these ferries cross-over them without paying for a ticket's price. Them living in the North of Amsterdam thought and think it most unfair that they should pay for a ticket to get into the city centre, what' all the others of the city don't have to pay for as they can walk and cycle freely around! 
So these ferries are free of fairs for all! Of course the ticketprice is collected via the municipal taxes.
