Brit Floyd
The main reason for the visit to Denver was to go with J to the Brit Floyd concert - and as you can see from the photo, this is no ordinary venue. We went 3 years ago but since Covid knocked out the last 2 years this was our first opportunity to see them again at Red Rocks. I have loved Pink Floyd's music since I was about 15 and though they haven't produced anything for a long time, Brit Floyd have been playing in tribute to them for quite a few years - they are considered to be the best tribute band in the world, and it shows in their musicianship and the incredibly authentic renditions of PF's songs. I was particularly moved by their playing Echoes from the Meddle album - one of the first tracks I ever listened to.
The arena was absolutely packed to capacity to hear and see this band play the songs of a band no longer playing and we mused on a couple of interesting thoughts. We don't think twice about going to classical concerts and listening to orchestras playing the music of past masters who are not only no longer producing, but have long since died. This band were emulating the orchestral rendition of a more recent but still incredible art form and doing justice to the creativity of the original and keeping their music alive just as those orchestras do. And then after listening to a particularly moving and technichally brilliant guitar break, it occurred to me just how creative the original was - not just the technical brilliance but the ability to create the music we were hearing for the first time when it was composed. So this was a great experience, and to emphasize the above thoughts, it was astounding just how many younger people there were in the audience - many not old enough to have ever seen the original band live, but nevertheless being able to appreciate the music just as I did 50 years ago.
