Sisters In Space Science

On This Day In History
1983: Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space

Quote Of The Day
"For whatever reason, I didn't succumb to the stereotype that science wasn't for girls. I got encouragement from my parents. I never ran into a teacher or a counselor who told me that science was for boys. A lot of my friends did."
(Sally Ride)

Twenty years to the day after Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space, Sally Ride paved the way for American women to travel in outer space. Thankfully we didn't have to wait until the 24th century for Nyobi Uhura to become the first black woman to travel into space; Mae Jemison did that in 1992.
