Timeline

This slice of wood was sawn from an oak tree which died in 1994 when it was estimated to be about 235 years old. The dark blueish stains are marks left by grenade and bullet fragments from the winter 1917/18 . New wood grew and covered the scars and the tree survived.
We saw this in the museum “ In Flanders Fields” which is a magnificent museum in the centre of Ypres.  Not a great photo because the glass case it was in caused a lot of reflections.
There was an interactive screen in the museum where you could search for a name to see where a person had died and which cemetery they are buried in. We found someone who I am pretty sure is a relative of mine so we’re going to go to the small cemetery tomorrow to see the grave.
A fascinating day.
