Red Squirrel

The Isle of Wight is just one of a few parts of the British Isles to be home to the native Red Squirrel. They can be seen in several woodlands and Nature Reserves throughout the island and are fiercely protected by various conservation groups.

My walk this morning took through a woodland full of birdsong to the Alverston Mead Reserve which is a haven for birds and of course the squirrels. There is a hide on the site overlooking water meadows where bird watchers can view the water loving birdlife.

Being early on a weekday I had the site to myself and spent a pleasant couple of hours viewing and photographing including this obliging chap who came looking for nuts.

I don't have the patience to be a nature photographer but was pleased with the squirrel pics. I could have blipped several but chose this one and uploaded some more to my Blipfolio

Look in Large to see his whiskers.
