Meet Nancy and Sluggo

The newest members of our crew. They are on slug duty. Sluggo has the brown head. Dan is trying a no till method of gardening in a couple areas. There is cardboard on the ground and then leaves piled on top. A small bit of compost is added when a plant is put in.  The squash/potato garden is about 1400 square feet and the slugs and snails love it! So instead of buy copious amounts of sluggo, Dan decided to buy 2 ducks for $25. They love slugs and snails. These two are Khaki Campbells and they blend in perfectly with the leaves when they sit on them. We have the little A frame we used last year with the chicks, with a mud tub of water, food and half a plastic dog house for extra shelter. During the day they get to roam the garden and eat slugs. They seem to be settling in. Apparently they will be molting soon and are looking a little rough. We did get our first duck egg this morning! I have to say I was a bit unsure about more animals but they seem to be fairly easy to take care of. We'll see what happens in the winter....
