Islay

Early start to drive down to Kennacraig, still unsure if the ferry would sail as we were getting warning notes about severe winds, but in the end we had a pretty smooth crossing and the sun was out a lot of the way. We’d taken travel sickness pills and I think they made me sleepy as I dozed the whole way!
Drove up past the first three distilleries to Ardbeg to get a coffee and have a browse (liked the basins made from copper like the stills, and the pizza oven made from a converted still outside), then drove north via Bowmore with a browse of the town and some shops and the little beach and around the peninsula to Portnahaven and back cross country via a craft place where we saw the yarn made by the owner from her own sheep. All very nice - I need to get back to some knitting but not sure what to knit yet so didn’t buy any yarn.
We arrived at the B&B place, right behind Bruidladdich distillery, unpacked our things and chatted to the owner for a while. Watched some rabbits and hares in the field and the rapidly changing weather from the huge windows overlooking the bay to Bowmore. Sun, cloud and rain scud across in rapid succession….yet we’ve been lucky to have spent most of the day in sunshine with just views of dark clouds and rain in the distance.
After some indecision about where to have dinner we opted for ‘Peatzeria’ in Bowmore and had some very nice crab ravioli and pizza with salmon and mussels…delicious!
As we left, there was a stunning bright rainbow from the sea over and seemingly into the beautiful round church at the top of the town.
Back home to watch some TV and have a cup of tea before bed.
Much better day than we expected weather wise, and seems a lovely island that will bear exploration over the next couple of days…..lovely to get away
