Poppyland
I’m afraid my photo just doesn’t do this field of poppies justice.
Driving down a small backroad this morning we came across this most stunning field of poppies I have ever seen. Totally took our breath away.
I can certainly understand why this area of North Norfolk was coined “ Poppyland” in the 19th century by the poet Clement Scott.
We were on our way to visit the Langham Dome. ( see extra) as we had not visited it since the museum was opened in 2014.
What a hidden gem.
If you are ever visiting the area try and see it.
Built in 1942/3 on the edge of RAF Langham, this intriguing building utilised innovative technology to train anti - aircraft gunners.
Both Mr C and myself had a go at testing our aim with one of the interactive training guns and one of the Dome’s original target films.
The gun felt very heavy. Certainly difficult. Think I got close to hitting one plane, but that’s all!
Must say a big thank you to the two friendly and knowledgeable volunteers.
Then on to Wells- next -the Sea.
Coffee sat outside watching the boats landing their catch of crabs and whelks.
Then a walk round the town, and up tothe Butlands.
Bought some local grown strawberries, which we ate on the harbourside. Sat amongst all the other people who were eating fish and chips.
After our delicious breakfast of smoked haddock and poached eggs the strawberries were all we could manage for lunch, but certainly tasted very sweet.
It was then a return to Mannington Hall where this time we walked round the gardens.
We were met with the heady scent of the heritage roses. ( see extra) it is another of Norfolk’s hidden gems. So peaceful. A real favourite of ours. Only a handful of people visiting. We enjoyed tea and scones, again sat outside.
The weather today was totally unexpected as rain was forecast. Instead we had sunshine and temperatures of 22C. How lucky is that.
The day finished with a wonderful meal at The Moorings in Blakeney. Another of our favourites. Excellent as always.
Drove back along the coast road and this time it was three hares which ran in front of the car.
Another great end to our last day.
