Fool's gold

This morning I heard a new to me bird song. When I located the source I saw this lovely goldfinch. I was so excited because I have never seen a true American Goldfinch in our neighborhood. Rather we get the Lesser Goldfinches that have black on their backs as well as on their heads and wings. But once I got home and checked the bird books I realized this bird is really a Lesser Goldfinch. The difference in this frontal view is that the Lesser has a black cap that extends below the eyes compared to the small black patch on the forehead of an American Goldfinch.
So I was fooled.
