Hello, Stranger
It’s always thrilling to see a new bird. Say hello to the Northern Mockingbird. While enjoying a picnic breakfast at the river with MrsP, I noticed a bird diving to the ground and returning to the trees. It kept repeating this feeding behavior for more than ten minutes before flying away. Mockingbirds visit Maine during the spring and summer to forage abundant fruit and insects; they typically have a repertoire of 150 or more songs. Apparently the males with the most songs win the females (how sad for any born tone deaf) • They’re master mimics of other birds, imitate frogs and toads, and also mimic human sounds such as car alarms, music, and machinery. Amazing! • Mockingbirds, not black birds, can actually be heard singing in the dead of night :) • Other highlights: Flowers and veggies are looking good. With lots of sunshine expected today through Wednesday I gave the veggie garden and flower beds a long refreshing drink. Our first peony opened today but I’m waiting for a few more before I take any photos • Happy Monday to you!
