Toledo
Took a train to Toledo and ate breakfast outside the rather beautiful railway station there before making our way up the hill to imposing gates at either end of the Alcantara Bridge. We walked round the old city walls to the Puerta de Bisagra and then took the escalators up to the old town, where we enjoyed the tranquility of the Sinagogia Maria la Blanca, the views (and Lemon Fanta) at the Mirador nearby, the bustle of the Plaza de Zocodovar, the El Grecos at the Museo de Santa Cruz and some very tasty pear and gorgonzola croquettes. Back in Madrid, we started watching Almodovar’s ‘Talk to Her’ on Spanish Netflix and then set out for the evening via the cultural centre at Conde Duque, where there was an interesting exhibition of old posters on. We pretty much managed to tapear too – some prawn tortillas in an alley bar, chiperones and alcochofa at a place off the Plaza del Dos de Mayo and even a late-ish last vermut at the mercado in Chueca when we couldn’t find a seat at any of the bars…
