Wild and Windy Moors - Haytor Tor

We certainly picked the right day for all the atmosphere of Dartmoor National Park.  Our friends Mike and Wendy who live in the area took us on a full tour.  We started off at Haytor Tor, one of the more accessible ones in the Park.  There's 160 of these granite geological formations on the Moors - they were created 295 million years ago!!!  We were blown away both physically and metaphorically.

We moved onto visit the lovely villages of Widdecombe in the Moor and Chagford.  The medieval "clapper bridge" (in the extra) in the village of Postbridge is thought to have been built in the 13th century for pack horses carrying tin across the river towards Tavistock.  After almost 800 years it's still perfectly sturdy and safe to walk across.

Going along the Devon 'roads' was an adventure alone.  Barely wide enough to accommodate one car with six foot plus hedges on each side, cars happily travelled both ways managing to find passing points and their destination.

We finished the day with a great dinner at the traditional old pub "The Nobody Inn" where we were able to get warm in front of the roaring log fire.
