Hampton Court Palace Golden Screen

Gleaming in the Spring sunshine, here are the Screens of the Privy Garden at Hampton Court. In the background is the new wing built for William III and Mary II and designed by Sir Christopher Wren.

These were designed by Jean Tijou, a French Huguenot refugee ironworker. They represent England, Scotland (these ones with the thistles) and Ireland. At this point in time each of the three Kingdoms were not unified and had their own Parliaments.

Tijou also produced the screens and grilles for St Paul's Cathedral and did work at Burghley and Chatsworth.
