Marlborough (Sunday 29th May 2022)

I was back in Marlborough again on Sunday, the final day of my Waitrose vouchers, judiciously spent on invigorating liquor. The previous week I'd been told about eight cygnets born to a swan pair but didn't find them, but this time they were the first things I came across after my shopping, and were my first of the year.

They were gathered by the Hilliard Yard road bridge on the River Kennet just behind the Waitrose car park. At first there seemed to be only six, which wouldn't have been surprising, but when the pen swan unfolded one of her wings another two cygnets were seen to be piggybacking there, so the pair have so far managed to protect the full octet.

I reached the Waterfront Gardens via Cooper's Meadow but took few pictures there having been there just a week earlier.

The lighter evenings meant that it was possible to make an additional stop on the way back, and I visited the Avebury henge. In Extras are a chirpy robin and a marvellous copper beech.

One of the first pieces I selected for the Top 25 Guitar Songs list I compiled earlier this year was this incendiary version of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love. Ronnie Hawkins had been performing it since the late fifties with various bands and earlier versions of the Hawks. Robbie Robertson, who plays the guitar solo on this, had joined the Hawks as a bass guitarist in early 1960 but took over from Roy Buchanan as their lead guitarist that summer. Their version was said to be inspired by Hubert Sumlin's guitar work on Howlin' Wolf's Wang Dang Doodle, another great record.
