Isla
Thursday - Cornwall Day 6 and today, we took a rather long drive over to the beautiful litle town of Fowey.
Fowey has thrived as a port for hundreds of years, initially as a trading and naval town, then as the centre for china clay exports. Today Fowey is busy with trawlers ships for the china clay and yachts. Tourism is also an important source of income, contributing £14m to the local economy and accounting for more than half of the jobs in the town and whilst we were there, we took a one hour boat trip down the river and after found somewhere to have something to eat and a drink, so a small contribution was made.
The main car park is right at the top overlooking the town and to reach that and the harbour requires walking down some rather steep footpaths and what seemed like lots of steps.
And down by the edge of the harbour is Isla as she is named, the ‘Rook With A Book’ sculpture as she is also known
The sculpture was created to celebrate the famous writer Daphne Du Maurier who lived in Fowey and was massively inspired by Cornwall. One of Du Maurier most popular books is a short story called ‘The Birds’ which was famously adapted for film by Alfred Hitchcock.
Isla the ‘Rook With A Book’ holds in one claw a book titled ‘The Birds’ and she stands overlooking the Fowey harbour with Du Maurier’s home of Ferryside just down the river at Bodninic.
After lunch and a walk around the town, it was time to return to the car but rather than walk up the rather steep roads after our luch, we took a mini bus back to the top. Interestingly, the price to come from the car park was £1 but to go up was £2. The reason for the difference was somewhat obvious, although they tried to sell it on the basis that due to the intricate one way system around town, it took three times as long,
And once again, as suggested by management and because I am still doing catchup, and yesterday's blip will have gone because of this upload, here's the link lol https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/2976960720710664932
