The Front Yard (Tuesday 24th May 2022)

After a full day out, it was another day mostly at home catching up on things, including working on pictures taken on recent days. I did some gardening, involving some watering-cans.

These lupin leaves were beginning to curl up despite the torrential rain of the previous evening. Their design meant that the leaves prevented enough rainwater reaching the soil in the pot underneath. They did recover later on.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Bob Dylan - Lily of the West (recorded 3 June 1970, Nashville TN)
There has been a lot of Bob Dylan on the radio in recent days because 24 May is Bob Dylan's 81st birthday. One of the tracks that Cerys Matthews played was Lily Of The West, a traditional tune that began in England and Ireland but travelled to America in the twentieth century and became well known in versions with amended lyrics set in new locations. Dylan's version follows the lyric used in Joan Baez's 1961 recording:
When first I came to Louisville, some pleasure there to find
A damsel there from Lexington was pleasing to my mind
Her rosy cheeks, her ruby lips, like arrows pierced my breast
And the name she bore was Flora, the lily of the West
Recorded during the sessions for New Morning, Dylan's version was released by Columbia, after he had left the label, on the 1973 album Dylan, full of outtakes from the New Morning/Self Portrait sessions, without his consent. He later returned to the label.
It's one one of very few official albums that I do not own and in fact is not available on CD except as part of the massive set of 47 CDs on The Complete Album Collection Vol. One in 2013, although two other takes of the song from the sessions of two days later were included on the recent compilation 1970.
