Mouth of the Mersey
We woke at 6 am and decided to explore the Wirral. On our way to New Brighton we stopped at Eastham Village where went to see the spot where the Manchester Ship Canal joins the Mersey. While we were there an elderly gentleman (older but fitter than us) was anxious to show us the visitor's centre where we could learn something of the history of the village. It was fascinating but its treasure was a wild flower and animal sanctuary with a panoramic window where we could watch squirrels and many different birds in their natural habitat. At New Brighton we looked across to Liverpool and I have to admit to thinking about childhood holiday visits by ferry to the paddling pool that has long since gone. There was a wonderful pirate ship on the beach that had been entirely build from drift wood and the children's shouts of "shiver me timbers" was a joy to hear! The sea defences curving along the beach towards Bootle caught our eye. From there we travelled along the coast to the much more "posh" West Kirby and eventually returned to the caravan site. A super day and the warmest of the year so far.
