Edible Fungi
... apparently!*
Chicken-of-the-Woods, Laetiporus sulpureus, seems a good match for the very striking bracket fungus we found while walking the dogs in the woods this afternoon. Wiki tells me it typically grows on dead or mature hardwoods, this one definitely dead, a very tall stump where I saw woodpeckers nesting in 2019. Hoping I might see them again this year but I suspect C & I and the dogs made far too much of a disturbance today.
A quiet kind of a day. Jamie got to Poole OK, his long train journey uncomplicated. I was up early to see him safely on the first train. A little housework, houseplants watered, a long afternoon snooze and a companionable dog walk. I'll try to take it easy while he's away .... but the list - of mostly garden related - jobs is long!
* 'Can be eaten when young but adverse reactions can occur' says wiki. Intothehills, a knowledgeable source advised it is highly toxic if growing on Yew. Personally, I am not given to experimenting with any kind of wild mushrooms.
