Primary school
When I learnt of yet another school shooting, I was visiting a primary school in a very deprived and diverse area of Birmingham and was amazed at how lovely the children were, how open and safe they seemed to feel in the library, run beautifully by a warm hijab-wearing (and very pregnant) librarian, and I couldn't help to compare.
The children in this school have a tough life. Many parents are illiterate, do not engage with school at all. There is a high level of domestic violence and drug use.
The library has no budget, is only part time ( but does a lot at home, in her own time) yet has achieved a lot. Children open to her, view the library as a safe, non-judgemental space and most are happy to sit and read. I wish management and governors could see the difference she is making and give her more support!
