Open all hours?
Apparently not... I went back to St Michael's Church this morning, hoping to be able to go inside (well I thought there might be a wedding taking place actually), but no it was locked again. So here is a picture of the outside.
St Michael's was originally the chapel of the neighbouring Maxstoke priory whose ruins are visible beyond the churchyard wall. It was built in the mid 14th century with the west tower being added in the early 19th century. Inside, if we were only able to see it, was remodelled and refurnished in the 18th century. There is a gallery, fine woodwork, a plaster ceiling and some clear glazed windows with a few fragments of the original 14th century stained glass surviving in two of the windows. I'm beginning to think the only way I'll get to see the inside of this church is to attend a Sunday service there.
