bush cubby

When the boys were much younger, we lived on an 'adventurous' block with acres of surrounding bush.
In the garden and bush they honed their 'cubby' building skills, bug identifying (think scorpions!), cooking incinerating sausages and damper bread skills and scaring themselves (and many sleepover mates) witless sleeping in tents, telling spooky stories as foxes occasionally screamed in the dark.

These cubby skills, I'm thrilled to see, continue in the grounds of our local primary school with this absolute corker, complete with mosaicked stone floor and some very classy engineering.
This is serious business and last year 'cubby rules' were introduced at the school, breaking of which could end in suspension of ALL cubby building activities.
The cause of most distress was the nicking of materials and the role of the cubby gang 'boss' who had the power to dismiss and recruit at the drop of a hat.
In junior's class last year the 'boss' was a tall, bossy 6 year old who ruled her workers like a queen bee!

It is encouraging to see kids out and about , building, getting grubby and perhaps tomorrow's architects and engineers....and politicians!
