I heart Hing Sing's
Leith Walk is a-buzz today. The sun's out, so people are out. Two men are mending a broken chair in the middle of the street. The road's dug up for the tramworks. A delivery man is blindly pushing a trolley of boxes through a temporary bus queue and sending everyone spinning.
It's chaos.
And then I step into Hing Sing's Chinese Supermarket. The quiet hum of freezers and a slow ceiling fan. Colourful paper dragons hanging from dim fluorescent tube lights. Rows and rows of gloriously mysterious foodstuffs. And a few people like me wondering what they're for, and whether they're adventurous enough to try any of it.
Today I'm not. I came for crispy duck pancakes, but I can't find them anywhere. I ask the lady who fishes an unmarked packet out of the freezer for me. They are 50p for 10. I love Hing Sing's.
