The Koningen Emmaplein or Queen Emma Square was built between 1888 and 1891 to a design by architect JC van Wijk. Along the square are 15 townhouses, designed in the Neo-Renaissance style.
The mansions were (are?) inhabited by people from the upper class of the Rotterdam business. This fact, combined with the somewhat sheltered location, led to the nickname "rich people almshouses."
