Susan

Our elderly neighbour, Susan, passed away last night, she was 90yo and had been ill for a wee while.

One Sunday morning, not long after moving to Chez Broon, we looked out the window to a strange sight. There lying on the pavement was an ornamental cherry tree which some wee neds had uprooted from a garden on the way home from the pub the previous evening.

"I think that's from the garden of the bungalow across the road." said Mrs B and suggested that given it was still very early, I should go and replant it before our new neighbours, who we hadn't met yet, saw it and got upset.

So across the road I went and soon found the spot where it had been uprooted from but something made me glance up.

There peering through their living room curtains, was Susan and her husband looking out at the new guy in the street, standing in the middle of their garden with a spade in one hand and their ornamental cherry tree in the other.

"Hello, pleased to meet you!" I mouthed in their direction, then looking at the tree in my hand, "Ohhhhh .......... this isn't what you think it is!"

That was  how we met 22 years ago next month and since then we enjoyed good natured arguments ........... I'll miss those arguments.
