Mews
I had just come out of the building on the left (the corner with the white window). This is the surgery where my wonderful dentist and my equally wonderful hygienist work and I realised that their building is part of this courtyard - the Mews - for the Tufton Arms Hotel, the imposing building at the end. This is obviously the back of the hotel and it fronts the main Appleby street. The Tufton was originally a coaching inn and there is still an archway that leads to this area. These buildings would have been the stables and coach houses with living quarters above, now they are self-catering apartments . . . and a dental surgery!
The derivation of the term Mews is complex, something to do with moulting Royal hawks!!
