Mrs Soup has got me reading Tom Ang's Digital Photography Masterclass. I've got as far as Key Camera Controls (section 1) - I always wondered what all those dials were for...

It seemed sensible to start with something that wasn't moving - hence the white table with pencil sharpener and bolts.
