The strong cool winds of the last couple of days abated and the sun came out which meant the “casualties” in the water were less likely to suffer in the cold water before being rescued by the lifeboat. As part of the festival at Fisherrow Harbour in Musselburgh the Kinghorn lifeboat crew demonstrated some of the scenarios that they encounter. A “fire” on board a yacht meant that the sailor had to quickly evacuate by the little tender and once the lifeboat crew established that he was safe they then had to check the yacht. They rescued a man who was clinging on to his capsized dinghy and another who had fallen off his jet ski and yet another who had fallen off his paddleboard. Finding people in the water is not easy although spotting things like a paddleboard is easier but of course these also have to be removed lest they endanger boats. The Lifeboat crews do marvellous work and often in horrendous conditions, unlike today, and almost all are volunteers.
