Following in the footsteps…….
Breakfast with a curious chicken in St Jean Pied de Port, (extra) the rest stayed in the coop, and an 8am start on the first section of the Camino Francés. The early morning mist got denser and when I stopped for coffee and a madeleine at Auberge Orrison you couldn’t see a thing. A mile or so later I climbed above the clouds and a new world appeared, and stayed there all the way to Roncesvalles 15 miles and 4,757 feet later. The ascent was slow and over a long distance and felt very doable even if it was a bit of leg stretcher.
I’m not sure how many people set out each day on the St James Way, hundreds certainly, but it never felt busy and I was blissfully on my own with no one in eyesight for a good part.
An extraordinary day, a numinous day.
