Doors of Castellana Sicula
The tiny agricultural town of Castellana Sicula was founded in the 18th c when Spain ceded Sicily to Austria. The Feudal Duke of the area, got permission to settle a new town, which he named after his new wife’s family, Castellana di Spagna, so the town is Castellana Sicula meaning Sicilian Castellana. It became an official ‘incorporated’ town during the war in1940. It is a mix of very old and relatively new. The older unrenovated stone buildings are picturesque in their decrepitude.
