The Tolbooth at Pittenweem Church

….where five Scottish women accused of witchcraft were imprisoned in 1704. Another two women and two men were named as accomplices.
One of the men died while imprisoned, and a woman, Janet Cornfoot, was murdered by a lynch mob in the village. The village minister ensured no-one was prosecuted for the murder. The minister was also involved with the initial allegations, torture and confinement of the alleged witches.
Not a village history to be proud of.
