Leaderfoot Viaduct

A day of exploring from our front door has bought more delight than we could have imagined. Melrose Abbey, the Harmony Walled Garden, a Roman amphitheater and fort, ancient bridges and stones, and this impressive viaduct. Built in 1843 to carry the Berwickshire Railway over the River Tweed, it has 19 arches and stands at 38 metres high. There were plans to dismantle it in the 1980s but fortunately it’s status was upgraded and it was renovated and saved. It really did feel immense standing below looking up at it.

We returned to our cottage for dinner and to enjoy the evening light on the hills and the bird song which is so prolific at this time of year.
