Villa delphina
I played tennis in the morning and then in the afternoon went round to see a friend whose house I have agreed to help sell privately. He thinks it will sell on the English market as the house has a remarkable history and would appeal to someone wanting to continue to run it as a bed and breakfast and gite complex. It was designed at the turn of the 20th century by a famous Danish architect who was responsible for the design of many of the most prestigious chateaux and houses in the department. It is full of period furnishings and features. It was used during the war by Austrian customs officials as their headquarters. The Austrian commandant was no friend of the Nazis and there is even a record of Madame White, an Englishwoman, hosting a party with him, an English squadron leader and other guests during the war. Madame White owned a prestigious hotel in the village and sheltered airmen who were escaping and hid Jewish refugees.
