Home gardening in Bangladesh

IMPACT's Mothers' Clubs in rural Bangladesh empower women with information about maternal health, nutrition, sanitation, hygiene and other health matters. Members are also helped to set up home gardens to boost meagre diets.

This is Jhorna's plot. IMPACT provided her with training, seeds, fencing and fertiliser to get it off the ground.

As you can see it is thriving and produces more than enough fresh vegetables for her family. She has sold the surplus at market and earned 600 taka in three months, which her and her husband are saving to provide an education for their son.

She told our local colleagues; 'Now, I don't have to get loan at high interest to village usurer. I'm free from all sorts of anxiety and leading a happy life with my family. I've learnt many things from mothers club meeting like health care, hygiene, nutrition, sanitation etc. I always try to convince other destitute ladies to join IMPACT Mothers' Club'.
