Reaching Great Heights

Home base is at Castellamare di Stabia, where Pliny the Elder met his demise in 79 AD watching the eruption. We took the funivia across the street from our condo up to the top of Monte Faito (1200 m). On the ride up the view of Mt. Vesuvius, Castellemare and the Gulf of Naples is spectacular. We spent the day hiking up and over Mt Conocchia (1380 m) and Mt. Molare (1440 m) through forest of beech and chestnut trees and loads of wildflowers. Then on down, all the way down, way way way down—- mostly stairs, boulder stairs, rock stairs, cement stairs…to Positano, with the incredible view of the Amalfi coast and Gulf of Sorrento.
