A very tricky job: I know, because I've tried it. With the tip of a trowel, which doesn't make sense, when you think about it. If the need arises again, will invest in the wee tool in use here, like a slim, 4 inch trowel. You live and learn.
No fancy tarpaulins here, old hessian sheets to protect from the rain. Old school. The house owner commented 'Second house he's done on this street, he'll retire on it.' No response. :-)
