Up at 4am to see the awakening of the Jack-in-the-Green on Bluebell Hill, Rochester.
First the local witches swept the winter away, then the hefty men with bells on did some stomping and twirling, and finally the Rainbow-coloured “Loose Women” brought a humorous lighter touch to a very silly bit of local tradition.
Later I spent the day in the castle grounds listening to folk bands and having a picnic with my wonderful group of friends.
How I wish I had never moved away and was applying now from Medway for the same jobs I am currently applying for from Henley. But there was no way of knowing.
