Thank You For the Days ..

Langholm

We had a very peaceful and comfortable night in the MH, parked in a lovely field somewhere in Cheshire (I think). In the morning we spent some time with the owner and her lovely Welsh cobs, and her nine cats.

Then it was off up the M6, in convoy. It was busy, and I was glad I wasn't driving the new vehicle ... but once we got past the turn-off to the Lake District, it calmed down.

I waited in Langholm, just over the Border, for TM to catch up with me. I could see a cricket match in progress. You don't see that much in Scotland, and I know virtually nothing about the game. But it was drizzling, and they were playing on ... I remembered the phrase I used to hear on the Home Service, 'rain stopped play'.

So when he arrived we set out to watch these hardy souls, and discovered that there's more to Langholm than you see when you are whizzing by on the last 50 miles home.

Langholm Racecourse is situated on The Holm/Castleholm. A small racecourse with few facilties and no grandstand. The cricket square is situated within the course.

Racing at the course is organised by the Langholm Horse Racing Association. The entrants to the races are all thoroughbreds registered with the Thoroughbred Register at Wetherby’s. The type of racing held at the course is mainly for owners/syndicates a chance to run their own horse under the “Flapping Rules & Regulations”.

The race course is not depicted on the 1st Edition of the OS 6-inch map (Dumfriesshire 1862, sheet xlv).

Information from RCAHMS (DE), May 2010

Who knew there are rules for flapping??

The 'facilities' feature in the first extra.  I think I could tag it for Silly Saturday and Dereliction Sunday.
