Stockport Market Hall...

Once at risk of demolition in the 1980s, Stockport's Market Place is the only market, within Greater Manchester, which remains on its original site since medieval times. It is the market that initially gave Stockport its name; the Old English 'stoc' means market place and 'port' meaning a hamlet, resulting in "a market place at a hamlet". One of Stockport's best known landmarks is the Victorian covered market hall. The grade II listed building dates back to the 1860s. Saved from the bulldozers by a hard fought campaign, it was restored to its former glory in a £1.7m Heritage Lottery and council-funded project. This view from Park Street takes in a faded advertising sign for Emerson's clothiers, part of which proudly boasts "Morning Orders in 8 hours Promptly Executed" now that's what I call service!
