Knit-bone
One of the many vernacular names for Comfrey gives a strong clue as to how it was used in herbal medicine. From the Middle Ages onwards the roots were ground up and used to make a paste which was then used to make the equivalent of a modern plaster cast or as a poultice for sprains and other injuries. It proved to be 'most efficacious in every case'.
