Bird of paradise

The bird of paradise flower or strelitzia is native to South Africa but it has made its way to many other parts of the world. One source I read said it's the floral emblem of Los Angeles. They come in a few different colours and sizes and once on a bush walk I came across a large white one for the first time. I like them when they are newly out but they look scrappy when past their best.
