Take the unexpected path

It seems that often, it's the unexpected that comes to define us, the paths we didn't see coming, and wandered down by mistake. I think the older we get, the more we are willing to choose those paths, maybe just to surprise ourselves. What's the harm? All we can do is fail, and failure loses so much of its sting over time. We not only know how to fall, we know how to get up! After all, we've done it so many times.

Failure is pretty scary when you're young. So is unpredictability. You need to use the cookbook for quite some time before you realize you can leave out the tomatoes, throw in some beans, add more garlic, substitute basil for rosemary.

Sometimes, the improvisation comes out better than the tried and true recipe.
