Lest we forget

Today is Anzac Day, a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand for ‘the contribution and suffering of all those who have served’. This is the third Anzac Day since Covid began, and the first in which large crowds have been able to assemble for marches and dawn services. I only saw this one flag, though, in our local streets.
For our generation war, and opposition to war, have been a constant backdrop. Our father was in World War 2. Three of my maternal great uncles were in World War 1. On the other hand my maternal grandfather was a conscientious objector and my mother was a Quaker pacifist.
Of course all the sacrifices and suffering should be acknowledged and respected. But how do we do that without losing the message that war is never a legitimate response to conflict?
