Sounds of Spring
My latest project, refurbishing the vestry of our church, has kept me busy with little time for blipping over the last week or so. However it is nearly finished and today was a day of rest to recharge the batteries and catch up with some routine matters.
I have missed having the time to just stand and stare and listen to the sounds of nature. I was conscious a few times of the woodpecker hammering away on a tree near the church, but other than that hadn't the time to take in what was happening outside. Today that changed and I had time to listen and watch what was around me. As I stood talking to a neighbour this morning I heard the unmistakable sound of Swallows and there they were, five or six of them, flying low over the river estuary. My neighbour could tell me that they arrived two days ago and were already in his shed checking out their usual nesting spot. Quite amazing after the severe weather we have had recently that these little birds can still arrive on schedule after their long flight from the south of Africa.
As we left to go to Campbeltown a Song Thrush was singing its heart out in a tree at the edge of the garden. When we arrived home almost three hours later it was still singing away in the same tree. Time to get the camera out again and take some blips! It stayed at a fair height in the tree and it took a bit of zoom to get a decent shot of it. However, it was happy to keep singing as I blipped away and only flew off when I went a bit too close.
I just love this time of year as the countryside comes alive with the sights and sounds of Spring!
Picking up on Rat's point here is the song of the Song Thrush - might be worth listening to!
