The Egg
Today's the day . . . . . . . . . . for simplicity
It's hard to explain how, what is basically an egg-shaped heap of sandstone, sitting on top of a green pasture grazed by dairy cows, on the outskirts of a tiny village in rural Scotland, can be so powerful. But that's the beauty of Andy Goldsworthy's sculptures - they're deceptively simple.
It can be found on a hill on the approach to the village of Penpont, near Thornhill, and it was built to commemorate the millennium. The Cairn is usually referred to locally as 'The Egg' or the pinecone. It is made entirely of red sandstone but also shows a variety of stunning hues during sunset.
Andy Goldsworthy continues to live and work in the village of Penpont ....................
